The sombrero vueltiao is the traditional hat of Colombia, woven from caña flecha by the Zenú people in the Cordoba region. It takes several weeks to make, starting from harvesting and dyeing the reeds to the actual weaving process. The word “vueltiao” comes from “vuelta,” which means laps, referring to the number of bands woven into the crown. Typically, the hats have dark brown and natural caña flecha bands, but they can also include bright accents. The weavers incorporate “pintas” or “faces” in the crown, which represent their signature or may symbolize nature or commemorate music, stories, or dances. Originally used by the indigenous Zenú for sun protection while harvesting corn, the sombrero vueltiao has become an iconic symbol of Colombia and is traditionally worn by Cumbia and Vallenato dancers.

The quality of the hats differs from one another based on the amount of fibers used in each lap (Vuelta).

Vueltiao in Spanish means: “Turned around” or “Laps”. The more fibers it has, the finer and higher its quality is.
